3 Tips for Maintaining Your Epoxy Flooring

Maintaining Epoxy Flooring

Maintaining your epoxy flooring is not hard. In fact, most business and home owners finish their floors with an epoxy coating because it is durable and easy to clean.

Even so, there are a few things to keep in mind when caring for you floors that will ensure they keep their integrity and shine for years to come.

Here are 3 tips to properly maintain your epoxy flooring:

Regular Cleaning & Maintenance

Dirt and dust do not stick to epoxy flooring, so a quick sweep with a dust mop or push broom is all that is required most of the time.

This can be done every couple of days or more often, if needed. Simply sweep from end to end, being careful not to drag any sharp objects (i.e. screws and nails) that could create micro-scratches.

To prevent stains from setting in, spot-clean spills as soon as they happen with a paper towel or washcloth. If there is a greasy residue left behind, you can use window cleaning spray.

Heavy-Duty Cleaning

Your epoxy floor sees a lot of traffic and dirt. Even with regular sweeping, the floor can start to lose it’s shine.

A deeper, more heavy-duty clean should be done every couple months. Maybe even once or twice a month depending on how rough you are on your floor.

A hard foam or microfiber mop is the best tool to get the job done.

Make your own cleaning solution by mixing a ½ cup of ammonia per gallon of warm water in a bucket. Be sure to rinse your mop thoroughly and often to avoid tracking residue all over.

Again, window cleaning spray can give you a bit more cleaning power. Mix one part window cleaning spray to three parts water. This DIY cleaner does a great job of cutting grease, without leaving residue.

Avoid Damaging Chemicals

When cleaning your epoxy flooring, do not use citrus cleaners or vinegar! The acids in these cleaners will degloss the finish over time.

You should avoid any soap-based cleaners as well. Soap leaves a cloudy film and streaking. It  also causes the floor to be very slippery when wet.

If you clean up spills as they happen, it is very rare that a stain will set in your epoxy flooring. However, sometimes a spill is missed, and the resulting stain needs a little extra “oomph” to be removed.

In this case you can use a regular dish scrub sponge. Avoid using steel wool or harsh cleaners such as Comet, as they are too abrasive.
